11/02/07: Sheen 6 - K.S.F. 2

Intro

Hello one and all, a big warm welcome to the first match report of the season.  I am Graham Lewis and this is the official Kingston Street Flyers post.

Match Report: Shene on Fire!!

Kingston took the rink for a 2:30 face off, joining the team were the new additions to the squad for the forth coming season, all looking the part with new kit, courtesy of Skene designs (nice one Barry).

The boys were quick to establish a professional mantra following an action packed warm up, led by the captain Justin Beattie.

Period one

Sheen took a fortuitous lead but KSF were only able to find the net once, through the leadership of their Captain Justin Beattie.

There were early chances at both ends as the teams looked to take an early advantage - Sheen goalie could not do anything as Barry Skene and Ben Knock were denied by the pipes, but stood tall to produce some outstanding saves as KSF pilled on the pressure. KSF stopper Tom Warner kept out Sheens explosive attacks, but couldn’t keep them at bay for long.  A few minutes into the game, KSF were left chasing falling short by a quick succession of fast offensive Sheen attacks, unable to hold out Jamie Milton, pulling all the strings at the back. Sheen were gifted more goals on their first powerplay, while Laurence White served time for illegal use of the body.

KSF looked to reply quickly, and after Graham Lewis had jinked through the defence he saw his high shot blocked by the keeper. A shot far from the point from Joe Erskine saw Sheens netminder making a blocker save, with Milton coming even closer at the other end for Sheen moments later as he hit a shot off the point. Sheen went on the powerplay and Warner again had to be sharp to stretch out a leg to deny Milton from the slot, before watching as Sheen missed a great chance when they were gifted a pass in the slot. Sheen went in 4-to-1 for the final minute of the period.

Sheen skate out 4-1 winners after the first twenty.

Period Two

The momentum swung Sheens way in the second, as KSF could only provide damage limitation whilst having ongoing frustrations with the officiating.

Just seconds after the re-start Sheen went clean through but Warner came up with a huge save to deny them. As the play continued, KSF’s skilful attacking play came through the partnership of Laurence Paul and skilful Ryan Harding, they single handily took the play to Sheen.

Consistent pressure and assured shooting from Barry Skene and Captain Justin, kept Sheen on the back foot.  No matter how hard they tried KSF couldn’t find the key to unlock the door….  They needed a miracle.

When all looked through with 10 minutes on the board, up stepped Graham Lewis, forchecking the Sheen defence, applying his aggressive hitting managed to pick the ball and produce what was the goal of the game.  Stealing the play, skating though the middle, past two defenders, 1-on-1 with goaly, Lewis kept his cool and hit the cookie jar, sending the fans and players into a frenzy, could this be the key to the win.

Under seven minutes remaining and KSF chasing four goals it was a tall feet to achieve, with outstanding form from Ben Knock always looking to produce a goal, his link up play was good but not enough.

Sheen stood tall and KSF failed to capitalize on what should have been an easy win.
